Video (MPEG-2, MPEG-4) chip market is booming

research shows that the total MPEG compression chip market will grow from $1.5
billion in 2002 to $2.8 billion in 2006. MediaTek, known for providing the
chipsets used in Lite-On drives, owns currently a market share of about 50%, ESS
Technology is second largest.


As consumer-electronic products move from analog to
digital, big markets are opening up for suppliers of MPEG chips. China,
for example, is becoming a major purchaser of digital consumer
electronics. A key factor in the market is integration, which is
driving down the prices of chips as well as end products, according to the
market research company. DVD chipsets from ESS Technology, for example,
dropped 15.5 percent in 2002 while its chipsets for video CDs dropped 21.6
percent.


The total MPEG compression chip market will grow from $1.5 billion in
2002 to $2.8 billion in 2006, The Information Network said. The market
grew 27.4 percent in 2002 as consumers rushed to purchase digital products
like DVD players and recorders, set-top boxes for digital TV, and MP3
players.  In terms of units, the MPEG-4 market will explode from 6
million units in 2002 to nearly 90 million in 2006, while the standard is
becoming the de facto one for portable and streaming video applications,
according to the market research company.
