Walmart might have a $199 HD DVD player by Q4.

File this under rumor, however with companies such as Walmart and TDK, even if it never turns out, it is still a very logical concept.  It appears as though Walmart has contracted with a Chinese manufacturer, Fuh Yuan, to manufacture HD-DVD player in time for the 2007 Holiday season.  These machines will have lasers from TDK and reportedly, a new factory has already been opened.

The price point for these machines is rumored to be between $199 and $299 placing this player well below the lowest priced $599 Blu-ray machine and comfortably under the recently announced Toshiba HD A20 at $399.

If anyone can pull this off, it will be Walmart.  If they do, watch for the advantage to shift to HD-DVD.  Walmart's sales power could easily make Blu-ray just another interesting idea.
