Warner applies for patent on HD DVD, Blu-ray, standard DVD disc

In a report filed over at New Scientist Tech, apparently a couple of in-house Warner engineers, developed and have filed a patent for a triple format disc. The disc is of great interest, as it can store Blu-ray, HD DVD and standard DVD content, all on the same disc on the same side!

Warner's plan is to create a disc with a Blu-ray top layer that works like a two-way mirror. This should reflect just enough blue light for a Blu-ray player to read it okay. But it should also let enough light through for HD-DVD players to ignore the Blu-ray recording and find a second HD-DVD layer beneath.

An ordinary DVD recording could be put on the other side, so that conventional DVD players can read the disc as well.

Considering that Warner will be releasing films on all three formats, this disc could save them money. The article can be found at the New Scientist Tech website.
