Warner to unleash 'Warner Premier' straight to DVD films

Warner pictures has created a new division that will produce movies that are only intended for DVD release. But alas, this is not what everyone is hoping for. We are all awaiting the day, when feature films are released on DVD at the same time they are debuted in theaters. So don't get too excited over this new concept for the consumer. In this case, think: "Basic Instinct III: Hot Flash".

But, perhaps this is a baby step forward to the day that we can bypass the box office...who knows? Brace yourself for a quotation from Reuters, detailing the grand plan.

The new division, called Warner Premiere, annually will produce up to 15 original titles made by well-known filmmakers, starring recognized actors and, in some cases, based on earlier feature films that played in movie houses.

Warner Premiere's first title, for instance, will be "Dukes of Hazzard II," a sequel to last year's film "Dukes of Hazzard" that was a moderate success at box offices. It is expected to be released in Spring 2007, Warner Bros. said in a statement.

Diane Nelson, who previously served as executive vice president of global brand management, has been named president of Warner Premiere. Warner Bros. is a unit of Time Warner Inc.

With the premier film kicking off the new Warner division, being a sequel to the poorly received Dukes of Hazzard release, I can't help but think this is nothing more than a last ditch effort to market a bomb. Except to do it this time on a cheap plastic disc, rather than the more glamorous and expensive, silver screen.

It's not a bad idea really. Right now, even if a film is a total box office flop, it sometimes can do pretty well on DVD, saving a studio from horrific losses. Imagine how well a film could sell on DVD, if no one knew how bad it was! On the other hand, practice makes perfect, maybe DoH2 will be a great picture....I hope so, if only for Ms. Nelsons sake.
