Wii outsells PS3 3:1 in Japan during July

The Nintendo Wii game console outsold the Sony PlayStation 3 by 3 to 1 in Japan during July, according to an article published by Japanese game magazine Enterbrain.  Through the four weeks in July, Nintendo sold 171,851 Wiis while Sony sold 54,823 in the tech crazy nation.

Not surprisingly, the Microsoft Xbox 360 was no where near the Wii or PS3 in July sales, with only 14,439 units sold.

Keeping up with demand has been Nintendo's biggest problem since it launched in Japan, with Nintendo essentially dominating the sales charts since its launch.  The company's lead was as high as five to one in mid-2007.

Nintendo's ability to attract new gamers who play video games from the casual gaming market has been absolutely vital for Nintendo, with much thanks due to the Wiimote.

Worldwide, Nintendo has been able to sell almost 30 million units, with Microsoft selling 19 million Xbox 360 units, with Sony coming in last place with 14.4 million units shipped.  The excellent sales numbers for the Wii has helped the Tokyo-based company have a 32 percent jump in its latest quarterly operating profit.

In the handheld market, however, Sony has something to celebrate, with its PlayStation Portable handheld outselling the Nintendo DS 256,765 units compared to 217,639.
