Already a week after the 2.5 release, WinMX has version 2.51 available.
We have released version 2.51 today, a minor update that puts WinMX Peer Networking Protocol search processing on an idle thread, which makes WinMX much more CPU friendly. Searches from other users are now processed using only surplus CPU cycles, which allows WinMX to work smoothly even while processing thousands of searches per minute. |
Additional issues with WPNP search thread synchronization have arisen with v2.51. On fast (p2-350+) machines, these issues are unlikely to cause much trouble, and on slower machines, these issues can be corrected by following the procedure described here. We have isolated and corrected these problems, and are working around the clock to complete v2.6 BETA 1. The new version will incorporate a few additional enhancements, such as a more unified interface (but with a 'Classic Mode' option for those that like the current interface), but we are mainly concerned with getting a strong implementation of the WinMX Peer Networking Protocol in wide use. Once this happens, we can increase a cache controlled number which regulates the depth of searches without fear of freezing hundreds of thousands of computers running WinMX worldwide. This will mean about 2 - 5x the amount of search results for many users. We will be posting details of the beta test on this page probably within 24 hours, so please check back here frequently. We need as many testers as possible for the v2.6 betas, especially those with slower machines.
So the CPU usage bug is almost finished, that was about time. However we will just have to wait for 2.6 beta... Is WinMX still your favorite sharing program? Seems like our visitors like it.
