Worldwide Warez hunt nets first conviction

GristyMcFisty used our news submit to tell us that the American government has won its first conviction against software pirates through its Operation Fastlink program. The Fastlink program is out to get software pirates and Jathan Desir of Iowa is the first apprehended, he admitted to pirating software worth $200,000. The University student is said to have had 13,000 software titles for sale when FBI agents searched his home earlier this year. Jathan Desir pleaded guilty to both counts of copyright infringement and conspiracy. If he is found guilty he could be sent to jail for up to 15 years when he is sentenced in March this year.

FBI agents had searched Desir's house on the exact day that
the US government launched its Fastlink program against pirates around the world on the 21st April 2004. The Fastlink program is a joint venture between both FBI's cyber division and department of justice's computer crimes and intellectual property division. The authorities are looking for copyrighted music, movie traders and software pirates.

The University of Iowa student is said to have had 13,000 software titles up for grabs. FBI agents searched his home earlier this year.The paper reported that Desir last week pleaded guilty to felony counts of copyright infringement and conspiracy. He could face up to 15 years in prison and will be sentenced in March of next year.
