Xbox 360 mod chips due in a few weeks?

jef195 used our news submit to tell us "Hope After All."  Anyway, here's a story posted over at Engadget that indicates that we may be in for some mod chip action in the near future. Microsoft has put a lot of work into this version of their game console, so this would be most interesting if the 360 could be hacked. What is amazing though, if these chips do indeed create a workaround on the security of this device, is how quickly it was accomplished!

SPOnG is reporting that the first mod-chips for the 360 will be available within a month, allowing the play of "backup" game copies, which, with the recently released software that allows Xbox 360 game data extraction, means that Microsoft might have some piracy on their hands before too long. Though, if it"s any consolation for the boys in Redmond, SPOnG is reporting that "Microsoft"s security is the best we"ve seen to date for a disc-system. It it weren"t for the fact that DVD is used, it"s likely that further development wouldn"t have been worth anyone"s time." Oh the irony.

The creation of such aftermarket goods is of course good for the consumer as we have to think that companies will think twice before investing too heavily in measures that can be circumvented. Maybe someday they will even give up and let us use the things we buy in any way we wish. I doubt it and what is more likely is we will read a statement from Microsoft in the near future, explaining that the measures they took were just to discourage the "casual pirate".
