Yamaha back to profits, withdraw from CD-RW business benefitial

Yamaha, once of the
leading companies when it comes to the optical storage business recently dropped their
production of CD-RW drives, because, according to the company their unit was no
longer profitable. Also other parts of the company were restructured in order to
cut down costs. It seems that their operation has succeeded as Yamaha  has
posted a group net profit of Y17.95 billion for the latest year ended March 31,
which is a sharp improvement from the Y10.27 billion loss posted a year ago.

Revenue at the company's mainline musical instruments
operations grew 2.0% to Y292.65 billion thanks to strong demand overseas,
although domestic demand for pianos remained sluggish, it said. The firm's
electronics sector also benefited from higher demand in South Korea and
China for semiconductors used in mobile-phone handsets.

The audiovisual and IT-equipment sector saw a decline in sales, but its
profits rose thanks to withdrawing from money-losing operations, Yamaha
said. Backed by the solid earnings recovery, Yamaha lifted its annual
dividend by Y2 to Y10 for the latest fiscal
year.
