A pair of portable DVD players

Cnet.com has reviewed two portable DVD players, the Panasonic DVD-LV70 and the Toshiba SD-P1500. Both drives offer "lots of the bells and whistles that you want--and some that you never even considered." The Toshiba is picked as editors choice.

  • The Toshiba SD-P1500:

The good: Excellent picture quality; 16 : 9 playback capabilities; very smooth picture in zoom modes; full suite of video outputs; digital audio out; two headphone jacks.

The bad: Weak battery life; slightly bulky for a portable; some awkward remote functions.

The bottom line: With fantastic DVD playback in a small package, the SD-P1500 can easily double for a full-sized player in your home theater.

  • The Panasonic DVD-LV70

The good: Lots of audio options; sharp, bright LCD screen; video-in/out connections; VideoCD and CD-R playback; good battery life; excellent 16 : 9-mode viewing.

The bad: Pricey; no component video connection; noticeable jagged edges on non-16 : 9-enhanced DVDs; mediocre speakers.

The bottom line: It may not have every video bell and whistle, but this portable DVD player has solid audio options and is a roadworthy companion.
