Active Media Products showed off a new line of 2.5-inch solid-state drives that are low powered devices based on the JMicron JM612 controller.
The Predator-X7 has 128MB SDRAM onboard cache, 8-channel JM612 controller, and access times of 0.5ms. Active Media is keeping more detailed specifications a secret, though the SSD is expected to have read speeds of 230 MB/s and write speeds of 180 MB/s.
JMicron is a company name some casual PC enthusiasts aren't familiar with, but the company makes controller chips used by numerous motherboard manufacturers as well as other companies. Using the JMF602B fixed some issues with earlier products, but JMicron is expecting the JMF612 to carry the workload in the future.
"One big advantage of this controller is its support for a USB 2.0 port, which can be used for cloning the contents of your old hard drive onto the Predator X7." He also added that the addition of the mini USB port makes "installation and setup a lot faster and easier," according to Active Media's Jerry Thomson.
The Predator-X7 has USB 2.0 support, and the company plans to release USB 3.0-compatible SSDs in the future.
The Active Media USB 2.0 Predator-X7 SSD is available now, with storage capacities ranging from 32GB up to 256GB. The 32GB model is available for $149, 64GB for $219, 128GB model for $349, and the 256GB model is available for $699.
