Adobe has started to advise against the use of its Flash plugin. Flash suffers from security issues and doesn't work on mobile. Adobe called for no longer using Flash when changing the name of Flash Professional. This development software has been renamed to Adobe Animate CC.
The animation software that can be used by e.g. website developers still supports Flash but Adobe recommends developers to make animations in the HTML5 web standard. Making animations in HTML5 is now also an important feature of Animate CC.
Flash has been criticized for years already. The plugin is not supported on mobile operating systems such as Android and iOS and Flash uses a lot of system resources. The last couple of years it has also become known for many security issues. In October this year it became known that a Flash vulnerability was used to steal data from government computers.
The fact that Flash is entirely controlled by Adobe, while the HTML5 standard is open, is another drawback of the plugin. With HTML5 developers of sites, animations or games are not dependent on a single company, in contrary to Flash.
Many companies have already called for the end of Flash. Apple, Facebook, Firefox and Google no longer support Flash by default or sandbox it.
