Advertisers and tech companies are keen on getting data of internet connected cars, according to the Financial Times. Sensors and software in cars generate data that advertisers and tech companies are interested in. Therefore advertising companies and tech companies are pressuring car companies to get the data, according to the FT based on an interview with a high executive of German car manufacturer BMW.
Car manufacturers have currently always denied access to the data, according to the FT. With the release of car software like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay the tech giants from Silicon Valley will soon have their software in cars. It's unknown whether these companies have asked BMW for data.
Advertisers want to use the data for targeted advertisements. According to the BMW executive an example would be a fastfood restaurant that shows an advertisement of a local branch based on the fact that the engine is on for a couple of hours and there's a kid in the car that might be hungry. Car manufacturers have made agreements about privacy. There is also a concern that car insurance companies might try to get data from connected cars to determine insurance fees.
