One of the leading online stores, Amazon.com Inc. has launched a service that allows customers to watch purchased video content from Unbox in the living room on an Internet connected TiVo set-top box, according to this Yahoo report. There are currently 1.5 million subscribers with Internet capable boxes with around 600,000 who already hooked their box to their Internet connection.
To help promote the service, TiVo is offering new subscribers $15 worth of content free of charge from Amazon’s Unbox service. Content is priced at $1.99 per TV show and $9.99 to $14.99 per movie title and both Amazon and TiVo are jointly taking on the marketing costs for the introduction of the service.
Unlike iTunes and many other video download services that are targeted primarily at PCs and handheld devices, Amazon's service includes the living room. However, content must be purchased or rented from the PC first before it can be downloaded to the TiVo. Content played on the TiVo is counted against the DRM's two-PC limit and according to Amazon's Unbox on TiVo FAQ, only certain content is available for the TiVo at this time.
