CDRLabs.com has just posted
their latest review of the Artec WSM-52X CD-RW recorder. As the model number
suggests, the drive supports 52x writing (and reading). Re-writing can be done
at 24x:
Artec's new CD-RW really threw me for a loop
in our writing tests. After running our usual writing tests, I was ready
to write off the WSM-52X as another slow writer. While I didn't expect
much of an improvement, I switched the recording mode in Nero from TAO to
DAO. Needless to say, I was surprised to see the drive's writing times
drop by a good 15 seconds. Of course, writing speed isn't everything. The
WSM-52X's media compatibility was a big improvement over Artec's 48x
writer. Unfortunately, its writing quality was questionable with some of
the more problematic media from Ritek and CMC. Hopefully, Artec can tweak
this in a future firmware update.
If you're looking for fancy features like special audio recording
modes, the WSM-52X probably isn't for you. What Artec's new writer does
bring to the table are features like MediaTek's Super Link technology and
a 2MB buffer. While this buffer is a little smaller than what some would
like to see, Super Link picked up the slack and worked very well to
prevent coasters. The WSM-52X also has a good number of writing and
rewriting speeds to choose from and is the first drive from Artec to
support the Mt. Rainier format. |
One of the best things about the Artec WSM-52X is its price since it can be
bought for as little as $ 36. The Artec drive gets an overall score of
7/10. Check out CDRLabs' complete review here.
