Our friends from
CDRLabs.com have posted a new review on their site today. This time they've
taken a look at the external ASUS SCB-2408-D combo drive. The ASUS drive
connects to a computer via the USB 2.0 or FireWire interface and
supports the following read and (re-)write speeds: 24x CD-R and 12x CD-RW
recording, 24x CD-ROM and 16x DVD-ROM reading. Here's part of CDRLabs.com's
conclusion:
 ASUS has done an amazing job with their new portable combo drive.
While small in size, the SCB-2408-D offers an impressive blend of
features, versatility and performance that few drives can match. When
reading CD's the drive had no problems reading all types of media at 24x
and had some very good seek times. Ripping audio CD's wasn't a problem for
the SCB-2408-D either. The drive flew through our DAE tests, reaching
speeds as high as 24x.
The SCB-2408-D also performed well in our writing
tests. Thanks to its P-CAV writing method, it turned in some very
impressive times, beating the drives from Lite-On and LG by a sizable
margin. More importantly, it did this without sacrificing writing quality
or media compatibility. Unfortunately, the SCB-2408-D didn't do quite as
well in our rewriting tests. While the drive was pretty quick when
rewriting with Nero, it was slower than expected in our packet writing
tests. I also had a very hard time finding CD-RW media that the drive
would write to at 12x.
The SCB-2408-D really shines when it comes to its
features. While the drive isn't much larger than a CD case, ASUS's
engineers found room to include support for both USB 2.0 and FireWire.
Both interfaces offer easy installation as well as impressive performance.
The SCB-2408-D is lacking support for the Mt. Rainier format. However, it
offers features like ASUS's own FlextraLink and FlextraSpeed technologies.
ASUS also gets bonus points in my book for including little extras like
blank media, power adapters and a case for the
drive. |
As you can read, CDRLabs.com was quite pleased with the
small ASUS SCB-2408-D drive and it's thus no surprise it gets the Editor's
