AT&T has unveiled a new service that will allow customers to have wireless access that has multiple payment options available without the need to sign a two-year contract agreement.
Specifically, netbook or notebook users can use their products to browse the Internet if on vacation or short business trips, the company said.
AT&T provides the service for $15 per day, $30 per week, or $50 per month. However, users of this service will have less data downloads and may have to pay more for wireless data cards and other necessary products.
A major downside of the service is that AT&T uses a SIM card instead of a regular modem, which forces users to own a notebook or netbook certified directly through AT&T. It's possible a modem plug-in for the SIM card may become available, but nothing has been announced as of yet.
AT&T and other wireless providers are introducing new methods to provide service and keep consumers locked into wireless contracts. Most consumers would rather pay money for wireless subscriptions to just one company at a time instead of making payments to several companies. Furthermore, as the revenues from voice plans continues to dwindle while subscribers move towards more data usage, companies are interested in luring them to sign on for mobile Web access from PC's.
Many consumers are interested in mobile broadband, but not interested in an extra monthly service fee with a contractual obligation. These a la carte mobile broadband plans might just fit the bill for users with mobile broadband hardware that is supported by AT&T.
