Again Heise brings us some DVD recording news from the current CeBIT. This time they tell us about five new drives, BenQ is going to present during the next few months. In order to be fast enough, many features will be made available by firmware upgrades in autumn.

At the beginning of May, the DW830A will follow. It will be able to write DVD+R9 at 2.4x and DVD+R at 8x. Support for DVD-R at 4x will be made available by a (probably payed) firmware upgrade in autumn. The DW830A will feature a better error correction "WOPC 2" (Walking OPC 2) during the burn process and with the help of a "Disc Quality Analyzer" determine the quality of the used media. Already in June the DW1600A will follow, that will write DVD+R9 at 2.4x and DVD+R at 16x (CAV). This drive will also be equipped with WOPC 2 and the "Disc Quality Analyzer". Support for DVD-R will be implemented with a later firmware upgrade. The DW1620A is announced for July/August and will be ready to write DVD+R at 16x, DVD-R at 8xx and DVD+R9 at 2.4x. This drive will also contain WOPC 2 The first SATA burner - the DW1650A - will be introduced in October. This drive might already be able to write DVD+R9 with 4x, next to DVD+R with 16x and DVD-R with 8x. But this all depends on how good media manufacturers can increase the quality of their dual layer and 16x media. |
What a nice bunch of drives. Hopefully they will be able to implement all the features they promise to bring us with their firmware updates. I also wonder if these drives will offer support for Mount Rainier or if the supply with SATA burners will be the end of the old IDE interface.
