So far since Blu-ray took over HD DVD back in January, the Blu-ray format has kept its lead starting at a 63.3% of the market share on January 7th, reaching a peak of 69.6% since then. On the week ending February 18th, it was accounting for 65% of the market, leaving HD DVD with the remaining 35%.
The Blu-ray market originally started growing rapidly about two weeks after the US Playstation 3 launch, with the Blu-ray format over taking the HD DVD format on December 24th, 2006. However, all the major studios that back one format only have not taken on the other format. For example, those with only a Blu-ray disc player will not be able to play any Universal Studios titles due to this studio only backing the HD DVD format.
It's still early days yet, so it will be worth looking out. At the moment, the HD DVD format has its price advantage with HD DVD players currently selling significantly cheaper than Blu-ray disc players, along with more adult film makers backing this only. However, the Blu-ray format has its advantage of more major studios backing it, such as 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney Pictures and Sony who all back the Blu-ray HD format. The Blu-ray format has also been boosted thanks to the help of each PS3 doubling up as a Blu-ray movie player.
