Many say Blu-ray isn't adopting fast and that Sony's prices are the main reason behind this, but recent studies show that Sony is going at it the right way. Of course high prices aren't client-friendly, but business-wise Blu-ray's strategy can be justified. Research firm FutureSource announced that when comparing DVD sales with Blu-ray sales in the first three years, you see that Blu-ray is outstripping its predecessor by six-to-one.
Jim Bottoms at FutureSource said he heard that many wanted to know if Blu-ray was really doing that bad. His research now shows that Sony is actually selling more than anyone wanted to believe before.
“Focusing on like-for-like coverage of Western Europe and comparing the first few years of uptake, the early indications are that BD player sales are running way ahead of DVD after the same time period. 2008 represents year 3 for BD and here at Futuresource Consulting, we anticipate more than 10 million players, including PS3, in use by the end of this year. Looking back to DVD’s early years, we see that closer to 1.5 million DVD players were installed by the end of year 3," says Bottoms to Blocks & Files.
