Buffalo ships wireless'G' upscaling DVD player

According to this press release we can read over at Bios Magazine, Buffalo Technology has Launched the LinkTheater, claiming to be the first Wi-Fi Enabled DVD Player. It may be the first wireless G player, not sure about that. However, it isn't out yet. Availability according to Bios is sometime in April.

We can read
further in the article, that the player is powered by a EM8620L decoder chipset from Sigma Designs, they claim the chipset is the first of its kind to support Windows Media Video 9 and Windows Media Video High Definition formats. The LinkTheater supports resolutions up to 1280x720 pixels and offers DVD up-conversion to 720p/1080i. In case you are wondering, upscaling does indeed work and it's a real nice way to use your HDTV setup. I have a Momitsu DVD player with a Sigma Design chip that can also upscale a DVD movie to the same resolutions and I love it! But, I can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080i on my set.

We can read in the press release from the same page that the LinkTheater is also unique in its support of DivX, DivX HD and Xvid. The product includes composite and S-video input and a Component Video connector, and an external Scart adaptor which allows users to connect almost any HDTV, big screen or plasma TV. The product supports progressive output and 5.1 channel Dolby Sound and DTS.

Too bad they failed to include a DVI connection. But, component will probably be OK. Also, the price is right.

Backed by a two-year warranty, the LinkTheater Wireless Network Media Player (PC-P3WG/DVD) will be available from the beginning of April at an estimated street price of £210.
