CD Baby: All profits go to American Red Cross disaster fund

Is there anyone on the face of the Earth that has not been witness, at least by television, to the terrible suffering that is going on in the Gulf States region of the United States of America? The devastation left behind in Hurricane Katrina's wake is a testament to the power of Mother Nature and mans inability to cope with her fury. None of us can possibly begin to know the agony that these truly needy people must be going through as we sit here comfortable in our own homes.

Our most basic need as human beings are food, clothing and shelter. These desperate people have none of these things now and have lost everything they ever had. As you can also see by watching news reports, the private sector, such as the Red Cross (along with many other organizations) have been instrumental in assisting the delivery of food and water to those that need it. This has freed up other resources, i.e. the Coast Guard, to continue their focus on search and rescue missions.

Thankfully, yet too slowly for us all, it seems to be getting under control again and many of the people are finally getting some much-needed relief. Yet, in the back of our minds we are already beginning to sense the long-term problems that are coming.

Because people still care very much about one another, we all feel a great frustration and a sense of wanting to do something to help out. Today, we learned of a good way in this email message we received from Derek Sivers, owner of CD Baby, which is a world wide distributor for independent musicians. We think it's best to let you read the mail yourself, as Derek did a great job detailing what they are trying to do. Kudos to CD Baby and all the many thousands of independent artists that are involved in this effort.

Hello,

Over 5000 amazing musicians have chosen to donate ALL money from the sale of their CD *directly* to the Red Cross disaster relief fund.

You can hear and buy their CDs, here.

If you've been seeing the images of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and have thought about donating to help those in need, please consider buying some albums from that page.

You're free to listen to up to half of every album in instant-streaming MP3, so I hope you use this as an excuse to discover some great new music while knowing your money is going to a good cause.

Thank you.

Home

I have bought music from CD Baby myself (The Palm Wine Boys-Up and Down) and I must say that Derek's company is top notch. Rest assured that they are telling the truth and any money that they get from the Red Cross page - they will send every bit of it to this organization. Thank you Derek, CD Baby and especially to all those independant musicians for doing what they can. We just hope we can help you to get the word out and that way CD Freaks can help in some small way too.

Here's a couple of older news links to give you an idea of the philosophy of this company:
