CDRLabs.com has posted a new review. This time they've taken a look at the Super-Multi drive GSA-4081B from LG. They call it "Super-Multi" because besides the usual DVD±RW it also supports the DVD-RAM standard. Specifications are 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD-R/DVD+RW and 2x DVD-RW writing speeds as well as a maximum DVD read speed of 12x. It can also write to DVD-RAM media at 3x, the fastest DVD-RAM write speed available on a DVD writer to date.

The GSA-4081B also performed pretty well in our DVD read tests. The drive was able to read single layer data DVD's at 12x and video DVD's at 8x. As you might expect, recordable media wasn't a problem for LG's new "Super-Multi" drive either. It was able to read DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW media at 8x and DVD-RAM discs at 3x. While 3x doesn't sound that fast, it is the fastest DVD-RAM read speed available on a DVD writer. Unfortunately, the GSA-4081B's CD reading and writing performance wasn't nearly as impressive. While most of the 8x DVD writers we've looked at have had maximum transfer speeds of 40x, LG's new drive read pressed and CD-R media at 32x and CD-RW discs at 24x. The GSA-4081B didn't do quite as well as I would have liked in our DAE tests either. The drive ripped audio CD's at only 24x and created a few data errors in CD Speed's advanced DAE tests. |
CDRLabs.com gives the GSA-4081B 8 out of 10 possible points. The OEM version of this drive costs about $ 110. This drive could be interesting for all those of you, who look for the most compatible solution. Although DVD-RAM almost doesn't get used anymore. You can read the full review here.
