CDRLabs reviews the CyberDrive DM166D 16X DVD-ROM

Ian over at CDRLabs reviewed the CyberDrive DM166D 16X DVD-ROM. Here is a clip from the review:

CyberDrive's DM166D is a good choice for anyone looking to pick up a 16x DVD-ROM drive without breaking the bank. While it doesn't include a bunch of features with fancy names you'll probably never use or even software for that matter, it does have some pretty decent performance. When reading pressed and CD-R discs, the drive easily exceeded its rated speed and had some of the best seek times we've seen on a DVD-ROM drive. When it comes to DVD's, the DM166D was able to read both data and movie discs at some pretty decent speeds too.

However, if you're looking for a drive to rip audio CD's or read a lot of CD-RW discs, the DM166D might not be for you. As I mentioned earlier, most DVD drives were not designed with high speed DAE in mind. The DM166D is definitely one of these. The drive's DAE speeds were anything but speedy and it also had some problems reading scratched and dirty audio discs. In our tests, the drive's CD-RW read speeds were also considerably slower than when reading other types of CD's. We also found that while the DM166D can read DVD-R discs pretty well, it will not read DVD-RW or DVD+RW discs at all.

Overall, CyberDrive's DM166D is your basic DVD-ROM drive. It's not the fastest DVD-ROM drive we've tested nor the most feature packed, but it is one of most affordable 16x drives out there.

A good review as always from Ian, definitively worth checking out.
