If you've been reading here then you probably heard of 4K. The name is derived from it's resolution of up to 4096 x 2160 pixels and it should become the successor of HD which has a resolution of up to 1920 x 1080 pixels. The name 4K has been used before, but Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) has announced that it will be renamed to Ultra HD or Ultra High Definition. With the name the CEA hopes to make clear that Ultra HD is an improvement over the conventional HD. The name was unanimously voted for by the CEA's 4K working group which includes the big names in the Consumer Electronic industry.
The group also decided to in order to be able to market products as Ultra HD, they should have a minimum of 8M active pixels, with at least 3840 pixels horizontally and 2160 vertically. Displays will be required to have an aspect ratio of at least 16:9. And to carry the Ultra HD label they need at least one digital input capable of carrying and presenting native 4K format video from this input at full 3840 x 2160 resolution without releying solely on up-converting.
Ultra HD will be a key technology during CES 2013 in Las Vegas. Where new displays and TVs will be demonstrated.
