The guys at CDRlabs have put up a review of the CenDyne Lightning II, a drive that is able to write at 32 speed, rewrite at 12 speed and read at 40 speed. The current version of the Lightning II is actually an OEM Lite-On LTR-32123S and that makes that most of you will understand it's a drive that performs well.
The drive has a 2 MB buffer and SmartX and Smartburn to prevent buffer underruns and to determine the maximum writing speed. Here is a part of the conclusion:
As usual, what it really comes down to is price. The Lightning II is not the lowest priced 32x out there. It lists for $180 and can be found for about $170 on Pricegrabber. With the price being this high, I'm sure many of you are wondering why anyone would buy the CenDyne Lightning II when you could go out and buy a retail Lite-On LTR-32123S for considerably less. If the prices were the same I'd have to say that the CenDyne was the better choice for the everyday consumer because of its better manual and tech support. However, with the CenDyne's price being higher, i'ts really up in the air. Do you need the manual and extra support or do you want to save a few bucks? That decision is really up to you. |
Before I wrap up this review, I need to remind you that CenDyne does not make the drives in their kits, but instead markets them. They are using Lite-On's LTR-32123S right now, but could switch to another manufacturer at anytime in the future.
