China pirates give Warner a headache with multi-movie DVD's

How the heck do these pirates even turn a profit? I know the old saw "Volume", but come on, this is ridiculous. We can't get (recordable) media cheap enough to pull a stunt like this! Here's what's happening, Warner Bros. Studios thought they could put a dent in piracy by offering DVD movies for about $2.65 cents a pop, but the pirates were way ahead of the game. Just about the same time, pirates started offering DVD discs with 5 to 6 movies compressed on a single DVD for get this, 60 cents. Whoa!

Although their picture quality is far from perfect, they are watchable. And priced at 5 yuan -- or 60 cents -- a disc, they are helping steer buyers away from the cheapest legitimate alternatives on the market, including DVD movies from Warner, which start at $2.65.

"What would you rather have -- seven hours [of content] for 5 yuan or two hours for 22 yuan?" said one merchant, who gave his name as Yang.

On a recent weeknight, a steady flow of customers walked up to his video stand on Wenmiao, just down the street from Confucius' Temple, rifling through a vast collection that included titles such as Sideways and The Aviator on the same DVD with other recent hits, as well as all 10 seasons of Friends on eight discs for less than $5.

The brisk business along Wenmiao and countless other streets in China illustrates what Warner is up against as it battles piracy in the world's biggest bootleg market.

The only thing I can suggest is to get the old steamroller out if you want to win this war. That's what they do in the Phillipines, take a lesson from the experts. Maybe they can even loan out the heavy equipment needed for the operation. Seriously, there is no way in heck that legit DVD's are going to edge out a pirated version at those prices and the availablity is a concern as well! 12 cents a movie even at reduced quality, they have to find another way, you can check out the source here.
