New technology, announced by Mempile , will eventually allow users to store 1TB of data of a single disc utilizing up to 200 virtual layers. Their latest demonstration utilized 100 layers and showed 500GB per disc, which is 300GB, more than Blu-ray hopes to reach by the year 2010.
The projection of 200 layers per disc in 2-3 years will allow them to reach their goal of 1TB. Current speeds are 25Mbs writing and 50Mbs for reading. The goal is to introduce these to market by 2010 with a selling price around $2000-$3000 with discs selling at $40.
