Congressman calls for CD labelling law

US congressman Rick Boucher has called for egislation that should make copy protected CDs clearly be able to be recognized as being protected. The congressman has said this in a speech he held at Jupiter Media Metrix's Plug.

In respect to copy protected CDs, Boucher said he did not think such products would succeed in the market because consumers would reject them.

"I would encourage the industry to reconsider [copy protected CDs]," he said. But as long as they are going to be on store shelves, "they have to be well labeled."

He pointed out that the only mention of copy protection on one of the affected discs is "on the reverse of the package if you're really looking for it." The congressman added that the language "is not clear," and implies that the CD may not be copied. Currently, a consumer can still make a copy for personal use, Boucher pointed out. "That's classic fair use."

For now it seems the issue is only about audio CDs, I wonder if these congressmen know about the protection on games and software CDs, and what a pain they can be
