The American consumer magazine Consumer Reports has tested the reliability of both Apple and Windows laptops and found out that one brand is by far the most reliable computer manufacturer. In total 58,000 people participated in a survey. They all bought a new laptop between 2010 and 2015 and the numbers show how likely the laptop needs repairs.
The Apple MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models were found to the most reliable laptops with an estimated failure rate of 7% and 9% respectively. Overall Apple laptops have an estimated failure rate (EFR) of 10%.
The best Windows computers are NV and LT series laptops from Gateway (13% and 14%), Samsung ATIV Book (14 percent); Lenovo ThinkPads (15 percent); and the Dell XPS line (15 percent). Consumer Reports notes that more expensive Windows laptops aren't necessarily more reliable than cheaper ones. HP's premium Envy series scored an EFR of 20%, putting them at the bottom of the list, while the cheaper HP Pavilion series scored better with 16%.
The laptop with the worst estimated failure rate is the Lenovo Y series which scored a EFR of 23%.
