Copy-protected Eminem CD with added value (DVD) planned

A few days ago (May 1st) we reported that the latest Eminem CD would probably be copy-protected. Ze used our newssubmit to tell us the follow-up story over at medialine.com:

Universal Music Group is reportedly in talks with its top-selling recording artist Eminem to consider copy-protection technology on his forthcoming album, The Eminem Show, slated for domestic release June 4.

Since late last year, the label group has employed such technology from Israeli firm Midbar Tech on lower-profile releases internationally, in attempts to frustrate any efforts to copy an album's contents onto a CD-R or post the songs to an Internet file sharing network. In September 2001, Universal stated that it wanted to incorporate copy protection measures on all of its audio CDs worldwide by the first quarter of 2002.

Interscope Records, the Universal label releasing The Eminem Show, also plans to include a value-added DVD with the CD's initial pressing (about 2 million in the U.S.), as a positive incentive for Eminem fans to buy the legitimate product. The DVD contains 45 minutes of exclusive concert footage and interviews with the artist.

The album nevertheless carries a stiff $19.98 list price.

Although the price is still pretty high the added DVD will probably persuade a lot of people to buy the original.
