Disney, Asus to release netbook for children

Disney and Asus are working together to develop a new Disney-branded netbook the two companies will market to children from 6 to 12-years-old.

The netbook is powered by an Intel Atom processor, 8.9-in. display, 3G connection, Microsoft Windows XP, and either with a 16GB solid state drive or 160GB hard disk drive.  Depending on the storage unit, the netbook weighs between 2.2 and 2.6 pounds.

Since it's a Disney-themed product, the desktop has customizable themes from Wall-E, Toy store, Cars, Hannah Montana, and other popular Disney movies and TV.  Asus and Disney modified XP to add additional parental control options, which will give parents an additional layer of security.

Although the Netpal is clearly designed specifically for young children, it has a subtle design aimed at convincing kids to keep it even if they've outgrown Disney content.

The Asus Netpal is scheduled to be released in late July, with an MSRP of $399.

Netbooks have grown in popularity enough for Disney to work with Asus to create a custom netbook for a niche market, with similar product launches expect from other companies.
