Dolby's look on HDTV's future...

Dolby Laboratories and Sim2 Multimedia showcased a new prototype HDR-enabled LCD flat-screen display using Dolby's new light emitting diodes dimming technology. High-dynamic-range (HDR) technologies are expected to provide crisp brightness when used in combination with LED local dimming technology. Yesterday's prototype shows Dolby's look on HDTV's future...

"This prototype is a stunning example of what Dolby's HDR technologies can bring to the LCD market," said Bharath Rajagopalan, Senior Marketing Manager, HDR, Dolby Laboratories. Yesterday's 46-inch prototype used a 60Hz LCD panel and features 1,838 LEDs, supports a 1920x1080 resolution and fits a 16:9 aspect ratio. More amazingly the company's 'working demonstrator' showed a brightness greater than 4,000 cd/m2 and an almost infinite contrast ratio. It's important to know that current LCDs offer a brightness of some hundreds of cd/m2.

SIM2 designed and developed the HDR LCD TV's BLU, which drives the electronics of the LCD display. Secondly SIM2 provides Dolby with its manufacturing reference designs. In the end the TV is expected to be available everywhere, but first the companies will start showcasing this prototype around the globe. So, before it hits the market we've to enjoy ourselves with announcements like these...
