DTS now mandatory as well as Dolby Digital for Blu-ray and HD discs

GristyMcFisty used our news submit to tell us about some very good news for home entertainment buffs. Digital Theater Sound or DTS has been added along with Dolby Digital, as available window rattling sound for our Home Theaters. That is, once they are graced with either Blu-ray or HD-DVD hardware. DTS claims to offer premium sound quality with optimum channel separation and clarity.

What's more, DTS' extension technologies - recently renamed DTS-HD from their original DTS++ moniker - which encompass higher data rates, lossless operation and additional channels, have been approved as optional features on both HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc. DTS-HD is the only lossless audio technology selected for both disc formats.

The extra space and bandwidth afforded by HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs means that content providers and consumers alike can appreciate DTS audio tracks encoded at data rates greater than 1.5 Mbit/s, all the way to fully lossless operation '“ meaning that the soundtrack is bit-for-bit identical to the master.

This sounds like some very good news and only makes the wait for mainstream high definition products a little harder. Check out the rest of the article over at Home Cinema Choice, they give some more details. If you like to talk about such technologies, then pay a visit to our Satellite, HD-TV, Blu-ray and HD-DVD Forum.
