Watch has posted a report from the CEATEC show in
Japan
which started today with plenty of information and pictures of new products and
prototypes. Here is a short summary of the most interesting news:
Mitsubishi
and Ricoh show dual layer DVD+R media and recording is demonstrated by
Philips on a PC drive. Dual layer products are expected to be
launched in springtime 2004 in Europe
and USA.
NEC and Sony show DVD
writers featuring 8x/4x DVD+R/RW write speed and 4x/2x DVD-R/RW write
speed. 8x DVD+R media are also displayed by several manufacturers
including Moser Baer, Prodisc and Ricoh.
Matsushita
(Panasonic) shows a dual layer Blu-ray recorder as well as 50 GB dual
layer Blu-ray media. Blu-Ray recorders are also displayed by Pioneer,
Sharp, Sony and Victor (JVC).
TDK
shows a blue laser disc with four layers capable of storing 100 GB and
implies this might be implemented in future Blu-Ray
specifications.
NEC
and Toshiba show recorders, drives and media for their competing blue
laser format called AOD.
