aviationwiz lets
us know that a few days ago Heise Online reported that during IFA Berlin, a large consumer
electronics conference, the DVD+RW Alliance has officially presented the
specifications for 8x DVD+R recording. Somehow we missed this before so here's a
quote from the article, poorly translated from German via Altavista's Babel
Fish:
The DVD+RW alliance presented officially the new specification
for eightfold burning speed for DVD+R. Afterwards it will be possible to
burn a complete DVD in nine to ten minutes. Differently than the past
4X-Medien the blanks are burned however not from the front to in the back with full speed, but begin inside with 6X and reach the terminal velocity of 8X for instance with a radius of 33 to 34 millimeters.
One put, it was said particularly large
value on the downward compatibility to older slower recorders with 1X to
4X. So the new media are to be very tolerant in relation to the laser
strength, and within a wide range with good results to be burned to be
able. Whether with older burners a firmware update must be brought in,
depends on the respective model. With past tests one did not experience
however that older burners overheat, as it was with the minus format with
the jump of 2X on 4X the case.
8x-dvd+r become of a set of medium
manufacturers starting from that 4. Quarter this yearly expects. Thus
Verbatim for at the end of October first 8X DVD+R and for surprise
announced also to 8x-dvd-r. TDK wants to pull tight in January 2004 with
8X DVD+R and to bring out beyond that also Scratchproof DVD+R 8X, which
might be more expensive about 20 to 30 per cent. While TDK manufactures
the Scratchproof media, the normal DVD+R 8X von Ricoh is
produced. |
Besides the official announcement of 8x DVD+R recording by the DVD+RW
Alliance, the article also adds that the CMC, Maxell, Prodisc, Ritek, Sony and
Taiyo Yuden companies are all working on releasing their own 8x DVD+R
media.
