Echelon - Be Very Afraid - Sort of

Antionline have another story on the echelon system.

A global network of 120 secret spy satellites called Echelon monitors our e-mail, phone calls and faxes. Yeah, right. Sounds like a wacko conspiracy for TV's The Lone Gunmen.

But our European friends are not amused. They're warning citizens to encrypt e-mail and other electronic communications to protect them from the U.S.-controlled spy system. That's the conclusion of a 108- page report released this week by the European Parliament, which has studied Echelon for a year.

Even conspiracy theorists can take conspiracy theory only so far. The European Parliament report concluded that Echelon is far less invasive than they suspected, intercepting some satellite data but not, for example, phone calls from undersea fiber-optic cables.

Other experts point out that no system devised so far can possibly sort through the incredible volume of electronic data worldwide.

Among the more credible Web sites on the topic is Echelon Watch (www.echelonwatch.org), run by the ACLU, Electronic Privacy Information Center and other groups.
