FBI starts investigating early blockbuster leaks to torrent sites

The FBI is going to investigate how blockbusters ended up on torrent sites before they even play in movie theaters. Earlier this week movies like The Hateful Eight and Revenant were illegally uploaded to torrent sites before they could even be seen in movie theaters.

The group responsible for uploading the movies threatens to upload dozens more blockbusters the coming time. The uploaded movies are possibly rips of screeners, versions of movies that are sent to e.g. the jury of the Oscars.

The movie producer that allegedly leaked Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight claims he has nothing to do with the leaks. The Hollywood Reporter nevertheless reports that he was identified by a watermark in the movie that could be linked to his company.

For the movie companies the illegally uploaded movies will likely cause a big loss of revenue. The Hateful Eight has been downloaded millions of times while the movie will become available in movie theaters no sooner than next Friday.
