Final specs for 8x DVD+R DL expected to be ready in April

DVD
writers supporting 8x DVD+R DL write speed have already been announced by some
manufacturers such as
NEC
but the specifications for this speed are not final yet. According to
Philips they will however be ready next month:

…double layer DVD+R
(DVD+Recordable) 8X products will be able to copy an 8.5GB double-layer
DVD in about 15 minutes, says Frank Simonis, strategic marketing director
of Philips Optical Storage, which is part of Koninklijke Philips
Electronics.

A
near-complete version of the double layer DVD+R specification was
finalized in February, and version 1.0, considered the version that
vendors can start to build products with, will be ready by the end of
April, Simonis says.

The
complete article is available here at PCWorld.com. According to heise.de Mitsubishi and Ricoh expect to be the
first manufacturers to have the new high speed media ready sometime in
Q2.
