First Australian jail sentence for music piracy

NickSTAR used our newssubmit to tell us that Australia has it first music piracy criminal.

A 44 year old citizen of Melbourne has been sentenced for three months. The Australian goverment thinks his sentence will scare of other people.

Melbourne man Issa Zaybak, 44, became Australia's first music pirate to land a jail sentence, under copyright law, after he pleaded guilty to four charges of possessing illegal sound recordings.

Prosecutor Doug Potter told the court that industry investigators had estimated Zaybak had $50,000 of sound recordings on display in his Heidelberg store.

Zaybak admitted to police that he had disposed of the bulk of his illegal stock when he realised he was under scrutiny before his arrest in June this year, the court heard.

He was charged with possessing 22 illegally copied items, including CDs, videos and vinyl records, worth between $400 and $600.

Well let's hope this won't be a habbit down under. I guess they will need to build a lot of new jails if so...
