Free Windows XP upgrade for burning engine

The german
website chip.de has posted a news item about Microsoft offering a free update for their burning engine in Windows XP, which allows writing discs in the new HighMAT format. CD Freaks.com already showed the press release from Microsoft and Matsushita (Panasonic).

Microsoft offers a free upgrade of their burning engine for german users of Windows XP. The update allows creating photo-, music- or video-CDs complying to the HighMAT-Format. The "High-Performance Media Access Technology" (HighMAT) allows for a userfriendly access to multimedia contents. The format was introduced about a year ago and optimizes for an unobstructed access to digital contents on self written media according to Microsoft. The navigation through lots of audio- and video-files or digital pictures on TV is possible via the remote control of your DVD-player.HighMAT also saves information about music, photos or videos like titles, interprets, albums or genres.

HighMAT is compatible to ISO9660-Joliet-format and is said to be playable on all players that were previously able to read burned CDs or DVDs.

The Panasonic NV-VP30 is ready to process HighMAT-discs but if you do not want to spend 400 Euro for this drive you might consider using a free software player, which Microsoft offers for their Windows XP customers.

The addon for the burning engine can be found here and the player along with a writing wizard can be downloaded directly from the HighMAT website.
