Google is working on a new operating system that targets modern phones and modern personal computers with fast processors, non-trivial amounts of ram with arbitrary peripherals doing open ended computation. The initial commit of the first code was on the 24th of June this year.
The code was discovered by the website Phoronix and unfortunately information about the OS is sparse. Google writes in the code Pink + Purple == Fuchsia (a new Operating System). The code also shows that Fuchsia is built around Magenta and LK (Little Kernel).
"Magenta is a new kernel that powers the Fuchsia OS", a Google developer writes. It seems to be a layer over the Little Kernel where both have their advantages and disadvantages. A Google developer writes about that, "Magenta inner constructs are based on LK but the layers above are new".
So far the OS seems to only running on the Acer Switch Alpha laptop. This is a Intel Core i5 powered device with 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD that normally runs Windows 10. It has a liquid cooled CPU, 4K output and a 12" touchscreen. We found also references to the Raspberry PI and Surfacebook in the code, these might be devices for which support is underway.
