HD-DVD (High Definition) touted as next big innovation

While
many people believe that the current DVD quality is more than enough quality for
their eyes, there are still people developing technologies that should improve
the current DVD image quality. HD (high definition) DVD will be the follow up
for the current DVD and should improve the quality of a movie even more. Mainly
because home theatres are equipped with better and larger screens there is a
demand for high definition DVD. HD-DVD movies can be stored on discs that can be
read with Blu-Ray technology, which also finally explains the use of Blu-Ray
technology to many of you.

Think of it this way. If traditional TV has the general quality of a newspaper picture, then a DVD image is like a color photograph in Time or Newsweek. Real high definition, though, is akin to a well-produced coffee-table book full of rich colors in exquisite detail. You can't get real high definition from a DVD because a single DVD can't hold all the digital data needed to create such an image for a typical two-hour movie, as an HD-DVD can.

On current low-resolution television sets, none of this matters. But in the world of big-screen HD-TV sets, the contrast between a medium-quality and a high-quality image is instantly apparent. The ranks of TV viewers with these sets are growing. Some 2.5 million HD consoles were bought last year, or one in 10 television sets. HD prices continue to decline; some predict sets for under ,000 by the end of the year.

Yes, it's another device you can buy, but if you are satisfied with DVD quality and are not planning to buy a large screen you can probably leave it in the stores. Read the entire article here.
