High speed DVD+RW and DVD+R DL on DVD+RW Alliance's roadmap

At the ongoing WPC Expo trade show in Tokyo the DVD+RW Alliance today showed its plans for future developments of the DVD+R DL and DVD+RW formats. The 8x DVD+RW specifications were recently finalized and Plextor and BTC have already announced 8x DVD+RW writers. 8x DVD+RW media will however not be backward compatible with 2.4x and 4x DVD+RW speeds and will therefore be labeled with a new high speed logo. Even faster DVD+RW speeds are in development and currently 12x is examined as a possible next speed.

When it comes to double layer DVD+R several manufacturers have already released 4x or even 5x DVD+R DL writers. Official specifications for these speeds will however not be released as Philips plans to skip these speeds and instead release the specifications for 8x DVD+R DL by the end of the year.
