GristyMcFisty used our news submit to tell us that he read over at the Register, iRiver has put out some new and pretty fancy hardware for the portable entertainment crowd. What might be of special interest is the fact that the little players have an embedded Linux OS inside. Linux is ideal for such applications and it's nice to see it being put to use in these consumer electronic devices. Go Linux!
| The PMP-120 and PMP-140, each equipped with a 20GB and a 40GB 1.8in hard drive, respectively, provide MP3, ASF, WMA and WAV audio playback, along with MPEG 4, AVI, DivX and XviD video support. There's still photography storage and slide-show features, too, and the machines also provide an FM radio and voice recording facilities. Video, stills and music track information are displayed on the PMP's 3.5in 260,000-colour LCD, or through the unit's TV out port. Line-in ports are provided for audio recording. A USB 2.0 connector is provided for both PC connection and to hook the unit straight to a digital camera from which it's able to grab images directly. Well, it's a good thing this puppy has a user replaceable battery, because it isn't cheap. But, it also sure has some nice features too. The FM capability is a real plus when you want to hear something "live" such as news. Five hour battery life for video is excellent as well. For those of us residing in the United States, the suggested retail price on the PMP-120 is $499.00.
