Even though it has received rave reviews since its launch a few Fridays ago, there are now numerous reports of overheating issues with the new Apple iPhone 3GS smartphone.
iPhone 3GS owners are unsure of what is to blame for overheating, but some people are blaming GPS while others say gaming or listening to music is to blame. It seems some type of resource-intensive application would make sense, and iPhone 3GS users on Twitter are reminding one another to try and pay attention to when the phone begins to overheat.
Several French news sites have posted images of reported iPhone 3GS units that suffer from discoloring and overheating issues.
There are now several threads on the Apple forums that note overheating problems, with users discussing what they think they were doing before the phone started to overheat.

PC World writer Melissa Perenson noted how her iPhone 3GS "became very hot. Very, very hot -- not just on the back, but the entire length of the front face, too. Toasty doesn't even describe how surprisingly hot it got. It was too hot to even put the phone against my face."
Apple hasn't responded to owner complaints yet, but some owners are screaming for replacement phones and a possible recall.
Have you noticed your iPhone 3GS possibly overheating?
In addition to the iPhone 3GS, some users are complaining of overheating iPod Touch MP3 players after they've been updated to the latest iPhone/iPod Touch software -- v3.0. All this talk of overheating devices has caused concern over possible exploding batteries, but that kind of talk seems rather premature at the moment.
