To the casual observer, Microsoft's corporate setting known as Redmond, the very center of the Windows Universe, seems serene and orderly. Yet, there is a white cancer spreading, not unlike a bad "B" rated horror film. Because the campus is being taken over by *gasp* Pod People! We at CD Freaks thought that the biggest "problem" facing Bill Gates was the irritating upstart Firefox browser. But apparently, that's just the tip of the iceberg, worlds are colliding, because most everyone on campus has white earplugs dangling from their ears, with the other ends crammed in Apple iPods. Oh, the humanity!

About 80 percent of Microsoft employees who have a portable music player have an iPod," said one source, a high-level manager who asked to remain anonymous. "It's pretty staggering." The source estimated 80 percent of Microsoft employees have a music player -- that translates to 16,000 iPod users among the 25,000 who work at or near Microsoft's corporate campus. "This irks the management team no end," said the source. So popular is the iPod, executives are increasingly sending out memos frowning on its use. |
It's hard to fathom what would be contained in such a correspondance and what logic would be put forth to persuade folks to part with a player that set them back hundreds of dollars. If anyone out there can get hold of one of these memos, we at CD Freaks would sure like to see it, for "investigative purposes only" not to start trouble of course.
But, what may be even more amazing is that these employees are bold enough to swagger around wearing the iPods knowing full well that it irks the higher ups! Ya gotta love 'em! Do you suppose they are surfing with Firefox too? If they give a damn about security they are, at least until Explorer 7 comes along! Shoot, are we ever going to see Longhorn with all these distractions?
