Kingston kicked off the week by launching a new low-cost 40GB SSD that allows the memory company to market an SSD to a select group of consumers ignored by other products.
The SSDNow 40GB SSD has a read speed up to 170MB/s and write speed up to 40MB/s, which are relatively subpar compared to other SSDs. On the bright side, the device has a lower price tag, and still is significantly faster than regular HDDs.
"The SSDNow V Series 40GB Boot Drive offers instant performance enhancement coupled with reliability and lower power consumption at a fraction of the cost of a new system," Kingstom SSD boss Ariel Perez said in a statement. "The 40GB Boot Drive is the latest offering in our V Series SSD line. It provides a low-cost upgrade solution that complements the installed hard-disk drive to extend the life cycle of existing desktop computers and workstations in homes and offices."
Unlike other SSDs designed to take over the enterprise, Kingston's newest SSD offering is more of a performance upgrade for PCs that consumers already own.
The Kingston SSD will be released on Nov. 9 with a $115 MSRP.
Although HDDs cost less and are much more prevalent in the storage industry, 16GB and 32GB SSD drives are now commonplace. Kingston's SSD is a bit lower priced, and its $115 price tag may help convince consumers to give SSD a try. Furthermore, since it’s being marketed as more of a complement to existing systems, it might have a wider appeal to price conscious consumers.
