LG 32/10/40/16 CD-RW/DVD-ROM review @ CDRlabs.com

Our friends of CDRLabs have reviewed a new drive of LG, the GCC-4320B 32/10/40/16. CDRlabs is the first website that takes a look at this combo drive that comes with Roxio EasyCD Creator and CyberLink PowerDVD 4.0 XP. The drive uses Z-CLV as writing strategy, has a 2 MB buffer and LG's Superlink to prevent buffer underruns.

Overall the drive performed pretty well, especially if you look at what you get for it's pretty low price. Here is a part of the conclusion from the review:

Part of conclusion:

LG's new combo drive did very well in our other tests too. The GCC-4320B was able to read pressed and CD-R media at 40x with some very good seek times, but I was a little disappointed to see that the drive was only able to read CD-RW discs at 32x. The GCC-4320B did very well in our DAE tests too. Like the Plextor PX-320A, the drive was able to rip audio CD's at 40x without breaking a sweat. Unfortunately, it did not do as well as we would have liked when reading scratched and dirty discs.

And then you have the GCC-4320B's DVD performance. Let's just say I expected more from a the first combo drive to feature 16x DVD read speeds. Although the drive came close to 16x in our tests, it never actually reached it when reading single layer data DVD's. When reading dual layer and video DVD's, the drive's speeds were cut in half to only 8x. Also, while the drive had no problems reading DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW discs, its speed was limited to only 6x.

The GCC-4320B does have a good share of features. While the buffer is only 2048KB in size, it's backed up by LG's SuperLink buffer underrun protection. In our tests this worked well to prevent coasters. The GCC-4320B is also one of LG's first writers to support UDMA 33. This is a feature that has been missing on their CD-RW drives for much too long.
