LG GCC-4120B review @ CDRLabs.com

Our friends from CDRLabs have taken the time to investigate the latest drive of LG, the GCC-4120B. This is a combo drive that is able to write, rewrite and read CD's and also has no problem reading DVD's. This at respectively 12/8/32/8 speed.

The drive uses the Oak Technology chip that comes with Exaclink, another Burnproof-like technology. Overall the drives peforms very well and CDRlabs gave it a 9. Here are the lows and highs:

Highs:

  • Can read most CD and DVD formats.
  • Good data transfers with pressed and CD-R media
  • Features ExacLink buffer underrun protection.
  • Low seek times.
  • Includes PowerDVD 3.0.
  • The manuals for the drive and included software are good.
  • Very affordable.

    Lows:

  • The drive had a tendency to slow down when doing DAE with some programs.
  • Limited number of writing speeds.
  • Had problems reading DVD-R discs.
  • High CPU usage when reading DVD's.
  • Does not support UDMA 33.
  • Includes Easy CD Creator 4.0. Would have been nice to see version 5.0 with this drive.
